CAD/CAM Technology and Their Applications in Craniofacial Surgery

The cranio-maxillofacial skeleton has complex anatomical architecture. For any abnormality in the craniofacial region, whether it be congenital or acquired, a thorough understanding and 3D visualization are imperative for meticulous surgical execution and optimal results. The paradigm shift from conventional imaging to 3D imaging and further its conversion to tangible form changed the entire gamut of diagnosis, treatment planning, and management. CAD/CAM technology includes virtual surgical planning, bespoke designing, and manufacturing of 3D artifacts such as models, surgical guides, and patient-specific implants. These artifacts found a plethora of applications including reconstructive and rehabilitative surgery, research, education, and training. The benefits of using CAD/CAM in craniofacial surgery include improved surgical precision and outcomes, reduced surgical time, and increased patient safety. The chapter presents an overview of CAD/CAM technology including its various applications, potential benefits, and future perspective.
