Three-Dimensional Superimposition of Craniofacial Structures

Three-dimensional (3D) superimposition of craniofacial structures is a technique used to compare and evaluate changes in the craniofacial complex over time. This technique effectively addresses certain inherent limitations observed in two-dimensional images, such as magnification and overlapping of different anatomical structures. There are different techniques for 3D superimposition, such as surface-based, voxel-based superimposition, and landmark-based 3D superimposition. This chapter discusses the potential benefits of 3D superimposition of craniofacial structures over 2D imaging, including superior information, improved diagnosis, and more accurate assessments of changes in the craniofacial complex.
