Three-Dimensional Virtual Planning in Orthodontics

This chapter gives a brief introduction to the 3D virtual technology and its multifaceted application in dentistry and orthodontics. Various terminology used in digital technology and the equipment and devices used are briefly discussed, along with its advantages and limitations. Further, dental measurement and surface analysis protocols, step-by-step procedure of digital indirect bonding, orthognathic surgical planning, and orthodontic virtual setup are discussed. Other applications of digital technology such as accurate printed splints and splint-less surgery, orthodontic appliance designing and fabrication, followed by insertion guide for TADs, and their accuracy are mentioned. An insight into the use of 3D imaging and technologies in virtual planning of orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatments has been provided.
