With the growing interest in natural and holistic approaches to healthcare, the exploration of biomarkers derived from medicinal plants have been received too much attention. Biomarkers sourced from therapeutic plants comprise a broad range of molecular and biochemical indicators, including proteins, genetic markers, and secondary metabolites, that can play pivotal roles in multiple facets of healthcare. These biomarkers offer insights into the therapeutic properties, safety, and efficacy of plant-derived compounds, aiding in the identification of promising phytochemicals for drug development. However, the discovery of biomarker in medicinal plants undergoes major issues related to variability due to environmental factors and the need for robust validation. Numerous biomarkers remain unvalidated because of overlapping signals, with typically only the most intense signals being selected to represent the target metabolites, leaving the less intense ones overlooked. Moreover, there’s uncertainty regarding whether the chosen biomarkers genuinely reflect typical characteristics. Thus, analysis metabolite profiles and selecting specific biomarkers continues to pose significant challenges. Modern statistical techniques like meta-analysis and computational systems biology, along with next-generation sequencing technology, have opened up fresh possibilities for overcoming biological complexity. To elucidate the pivotal molecular determinants involved in secondary metabolite biosynthesis, researchers have conducted meta-analyses on publicly accessible transcriptomics datasets derived from medicinal plants with significant economic value. These analyses aim to identify differentially expressed genes in shoot and root tissues, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms governing secondary metabolite production. This study has taken into account the recent intervention of contemporary omics technology, which provides an overview of the developing field of biomarker discovery in medicinal plants and highlights its possible ramifications for drug development, personalized medicine, and the broader understanding of plant-based therapeutics.
