The Importance of Natural Products in Drug Discovery: Opportunities and Success
摘要
Natural products are biological chemicals created by living creatures such as plants, animals, microorganisms, and sea critters. Various endogenous and exogenous factors have compelled living organisms to produce such products over time having great ecological significance. Before realizing the diverse potential of various natural products, they were believed to benefit only specific organisms, aiding in defense, metabolism, attraction, and survival strategies. Inspired by nature, the earliest civilization used natural products for various purposes like medicine, cosmetics, dyes, and perfumes. In pharmaceutical research, natural products are essential because they provide prospective pathways for the discovery of novel medicinal molecules and have yielded excellent outcomes. Natural products possess diverse pharmacophores, stereochemistry, and metabolite-like properties. Their chemical diversity provides a potential for discovering novel compounds with varied properties. Unique biological activities, synergy, and complexity make them valuable for addressing disease targets, combating drug resistance, and inhibiting protein interactions. They inspire new compound designs, enhance drug potency, and align with sustainability goals. Natural products validate traditional medicine and hold promise for personalized medicine and neurological disorders. The bioactivity of natural compounds may now be predicted by researchers, thanks to the use of contemporary technology techniques like bioinformatics and data mining. This chapter covers the relevance of natural products in the medication development process.
