Introduction to Ethnobotany and Traditional Medicine
摘要
The field of ethnobotany, as a scientific research discipline, has been extensively employed for the purpose of documenting indigenous knowledge pertaining to plant utilization, as well as for compiling a comprehensive inventory of plants that hold significance in traditional herbal medicine across various nations. These studies play a crucial role in the advancement of this field. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that in certain nations during recent times, there has been a notable utilization of ethnobotanical investigations in the realm of pharmaceutical research, specifically pertaining to the identification and development of novel therapeutic agents. The current chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the historical progression and evolutionary trajectory of ethnobotany, elucidating its significant role in the exploration and advancement of traditional medicine within clinical contexts. This field of study has been crucial in uncovering and developing the therapeutic potential of various plant species that have long been employed in indigenous cultures for the treatment of ailments. Ethnobotany has made noteworthy contributions to the preservation of human health and well-being, particularly in underdeveloped regions of the globe. In these areas, traditional medicines derived from plants serve as the primary way of treating diseases. This chapter also encompasses an extensive examination of the current methodologies employed in ethnobotanical field research, as well as an analysis of the obstacles encountered in the ongoing pursuit of identifying novel bioactive natural compounds via ethnobotanically guided drug discovery and development initiatives.
