Introduction

This chapter offers a brief survey of the state-of-the-art literature available on the multi-stage feedback control designs for both continuous-time and discrete-time systems. For continuous-time systems, discussions are given on two-stage and three-stage designs of feedback controllers and observers. Whereas for discrete-time systems, in addition to what is stated for continuous-time systems, thoughts are given on multirate state feedback designs. Later the motivation for writing this monograph is highlighted. The chapter ends with the organization of the monograph.
