Redox Landscape in Flow Cytometry
摘要
Flow cytometry is a powerful technique widely used in life sciences to analyze and characterize various cellular properties, including redox status. The redox landscape refers to the dynamic balance between oxidants (reactive oxygen species—ROS) and antioxidants within cells. This delicate equilibrium plays a crucial role in cellular processes, such as cell signaling, metabolism, and stress response. Flow cytometry enables researchers to study the redox landscape at the single-cell level, providing valuable insights into the heterogeneity and complexity of redox regulation within a cell population. There are several fluorophores and probes available that can specifically measure ROS levels, mitochondrial membrane potential, and antioxidant activity. These fluorescent markers can be simultaneously analyzed with other cellular markers, allowing researchers to correlate redox changes with cell surface markers, intracellular proteins, or cell cycle stages. By employing flow cytometry to investigate the redox landscape, researchers can uncover critical details about cellular health, stress responses, and disease states. This knowledge can lead to the development of novel therapies or interventions targeting redox-related processes, ultimately advancing our understanding of cellular biology and disease mechanisms.
