Cyber-attacks are ever growing and ransomware being one of the major threat to the safety of cyber users. The number of Ransomware attacks has increased considerably more so after the COVID-19 pandemic. Ransomware is targeting businesses, governments and critical infrastructure rather than individual cyber users due to huge monetary gains from bigger targets. This paper presents an overview of ransomware and why ransomware should be perceived as an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT). The current trends of Ransomware are described. In this paper, various ransomware attacks that occurred recently are discussed, the state of the art techniques for detection of Ransomware, guidelines for prevention are also presented in this paper. Future work based on the predictions of ransomware trends is also presented.

摘要
