Atuleer Village—The Cliff Village

Atuleer village, situated in the mountainous region of Sichuan Province, is renowned for its unique geographic isolation and harsh living conditions. Perched atop a steep cliff, the village was historically cut off from the outside world, posing significant challenges to accessibility and economic development. Consequently, this geographical barrier led to various key challenges, including a lack of accessible medical and educational services, underdeveloped local industries, and the village’s isolation and closed management. This chapter examines the village’s approach to addressing these challenges through the construction of modern infrastructure, educational and medical facilities, and analyzes their impact. The implementation of agricultural and tourism initiatives, along with the relocation of villagers, has further enhanced the effectiveness of the poverty alleviation program. Additionally, a comparable case study can be found in Nepal, a landlocked country in South Asia, where regions in the Himalayas have faced similar challenges. The chapter also explores the case of the poverty-stricken Xiadang village in Fujian Province. Their successful poverty alleviation measures, including infrastructure development, business support, agricultural assistance, and tourism promotion, have demonstrated effectiveness in improving the village's socio-economic conditions.
