Yuanlong Village Eco-migration

摘要

This case study delves into the concept of eco-migration, a central component of China’s 12th Five-Year Plan. The successful pilot experiment of eco-migration at Yuanlong village in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region highlights key factors, with a particular emphasis on the collaboration between provinces. The subsequent improvements in industrial structure and the significant role of the CCP as the project initiator in poverty alleviation efforts will also be discussed. This study examines the migration from Xihaigu, an area classified by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Development Agency in 1972 as one of the least suitable areas for human settlement and survival due to its “absolute poverty” conditions. This region was characterized by a scarcity of clean water, a fragile ecological environment, and a lack of educational resources. The migration to Yuanlong village was accompanied by ecosystem improvements, and efforts in basic infrastructure and industry development through cross-province collaboration. Additionally, neighborhood relationships were fostered, including with ethnic minority groups, promoting knowledge and dedication to the environment among the villagers, all supported by relevant public policy. Relocation and development strategies were further studied by reviewing the case in Hubei on industry creation and financial aid.
