Diagnostic Tests for Migraine

Migraine derives from the Greek word hemicrania, which means “half of the head” and was previously known as “hypoglycaemic headache” in the early twentieth century. It is the most prevalent interdisciplinary and complex neurologic condition marked by recurrent headache attacks. With 12% of the population affected, migraines can strike up to 17% of women and 6% of men annually. It typically affects girls more often than boys when they are young. North America has the highest adjusted prevalence of migraine, followed by Europe, Asia, Africa, South and Central America, and South America. It is the second most common cause of disability globally. A family history of migraines is common. If one or both of the parents have a history of migraines, the reported risk rises to 40% and 75%, respectively.
