Enhancing Internal Networks Security and Limiting Lateral Movement Through Hidden Services in Anonymous Communication

In the ever-evolving landscape of the digital domain, the frequency and complexity of network attacks continue to increase, creating significant challenges for organizations seeking to strengthen internal network security. Among the various threats, lateral movement attacks are of particular concern. Traditional defenses such as network segmentation, access control, and firewalls have become increasingly inadequate to counter these intrusions. Therefore, this paper proposes an innovative strategy using hidden services in anonymous communication. This strategy consists of two essential components: the intranet service hiding module and the hidden service publishing module. When in operation, it hides regular services by listening on the loopback address and uses the isolation capabilities provided by anonymous networks to confine intranet access to a dedicated anonymous channel. To evaluate the effectiveness of our approach, experiments were conducted in two different internal network test environments-one that implemented our strategy and one that did not. Data analysis, including insights into attack paths and success rates, indicates that implementing our strategy significantly reduces an attacker’s ability to detect and exploit internal network resources. While we are confident in the practicality and potential value of our strategy, we recognize its limitations and potential challenges. As a result, we are committed to continually refining our strategy to further improve its security, robustness, and ease of use.
