Old Shanghai was the most internationalized metropolis in the modern history of China. All about Shanghai, an English book published in Shanghai in 1935, thus introduced the city to Westerners: Shanghai was the sixth largest city in the world, the Paris of the East, and perhaps the most cosmopolitan city on Earth.
