Thermal Power in India—Past, Present, and Future Perspectives

The need for energy has significantly increased in India as a result of its massive population and quickly expanding economy. A wide range of electricity-producing methods has been developed around the country to accommodate this need. This review offers an overview of these methods, tracking their development, use, and significance in the Indian context. We explore the issues and environmental risks posed by traditional coal-based thermal power, which historically served as the foundation of the country’s electricity grid. The discussion then shifts to the massive hydroelectric projects and how they serve as both power plants and water management systems. The growing solar and wind power businesses serve as a beacon for the country’s advancement towards a future that is more environmentally friendly. They thoroughly explore government’s lofty goals, and also the difficulties associated with grid integration. With a focus on its potential for clean base-load capacity, nuclear energy has also found a place for the present and future development of India, despite its low contribution. Both technology developments and supportive legislative frameworks have contributed to the exponential expansion of energy that comes from natural sources, particularly wind and solar power. These renewable source grid integration and intermittency problems are also covered. Emerging technologies and strategies, like tidal energy, geothermal energy, and biomass, highlight India’s ongoing efforts to diversify its energy sources. Recent studies into alternate techniques, like tidal and biomass energy, are also mentioned. The focus of the assessment is on the governmental choices, technological advancements, and socioeconomic issues that have influenced India’s trajectory in terms of energy generation. The study’s conclusions provide information on potential future directions and sources of reliable and sustainable energy generation in the nation.
