E-Seal in a Typical Convergent–Divergent (CD) Nozzle for a Liquid Engine

Convergent–divergent (CD) nozzles of liquid engines are subjected to long duration hot tests to check their endurance. They are susceptible to gas entry at the fore-end (FE) interface of throat retainer ring and silica phenolic (SP) throat which may further lead to substantial charring, with possibility of erosion of throat. An e-seal is worked out to prevent such scenario. Its configuration, thermo-structural analysis, load distribution through grooves at throat back wall, and its overall effect on the scheme are exhibited in this article.
