Conquering Chikungunya Virus: Global Threats and Promising Solutions

摘要

The Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), identified in Tanzania during 1952–1953, has triggered numerous outbreaks worldwide, causing fever, headache, rash, and debilitating joints pain in humans. Its transmission involves two distinct cycles: sylvatic and urban, with Aedes group of mosquitos, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Considering broad range climatic adaptation of Aedes albopictus, raises concern about the virus’s potential global dissemination. Given the lack of specific treatment, Chikungunya has evolved into a significant global health issue, necessitating reliance on symptomatic therapies such as analgesics and antipyretics. The imperative for combating this virus lies in the development of a vaccine. Studies underscore the pivotal role of CHIKV-specific humoral responses in effectively countering the virus. Notably, vaccines based on virus-like particles (VLPs) have demonstrated efficacy in inducing protective neutralizing antibodies. Despite these advancements, further research is essential in unraveling optimal vaccine strategies and understanding the adaptive immune responses potential in controlling viremia and rheumatic clinical manifestations associated with CHIKV infection. The quest for a comprehensive understanding of these aspects is crucial in advancing our ability to tackle and mitigate the impact of this global health challenge.
