The Viral Vortex: Navigating the Rotavirus Disease, Epidemiology, and Immunization

Rotavirus is a key agent in infant gastroenteritis. Rotavirus infections are a major burden to the developing countries of the world. It leads to 28% of diarrhea-related deaths of children under 5 years of age. Of all the genotypes reported globally, the genotype G9P[8] is the most prevalent. The spread of rotavirus infections is governed by sanitary measures, public health interventions, and the health status of a region. Rotavirus is double-stranded RNA virus with 11 segments of genome belonging to family Reoviridae. The viral capsid is triple-layered with a typical wheel-like appearance evident in electron microscopy. Viral serotyping is based on neutralizing antibodies against VP7 and VP4 proteins. Rotaviral virulence is affected by both structural and non-structural proteins. Immunocompromised individuals meet with severe outcomes of the infection. Rotaviral infections can be controlled by vaccination. However, the epidemiology of the region concerned has to be taken into account while implementing control and prevention measures.
