So far, we have witnessed the evolution of the formulation of classical dynamics from Newton’s equations, through Lagrange’s equations and the principle of extremal action to Hamilton’s equations, their formulation via Poisson brackets and their interpretation in terms of geodesics on configuration space or vector fields on phase space.
