Coupling of Carbon and Silica in the Oceans

Scrutiny of observational data on carbon and silicic acid identifies a distinct relationship between them. Conventional concepts of diatomaceous opal dissolution, carbonate dissolution, organic matter oxidation, or water mass mixing cannot conveniently explain the relationship. Some long-standing theories of the carbonic system are also presented.
