Exploring the Potential of Simplifying Ikat Dyeing Technique for Bomkai Weavers in Odisha

Bomkai weavers are skilled artisans from the state of Odisha, located in the eastern part of India. Among the several rich textiles of Odisha, the Bomkai weavers are known for their intricate Ikat designs and exquisite weaving techniques. Their artistry and craftsmanship have earned them recognition worldwide. Odisha Ikat, also known as the “Bandha of Odisha,” is a special resist dyeing method. This method uses creation of patterns on the loom before weaving. This technique involves tie dyeing the warp and weft threads to create designs on the yarn before weaving; resulting in stunning designs and patterns that unravel once the textile is woven. This is a labour intensive and time consuming technique. This study explores the possibility of teaching the simplified art of Ikat dyeing to weavers in Gopalpur, Jajhpur district, Odisha. The research is exploratory and an action research done on the field, understanding the concerns of the artisans with respect to the intricate process of Ikat weaving. The study was performed in only one village: Gopalpur, Jajhpur district with 10 artisans. Our research shows that learning the proposed process of Ikat dyeing techniques can reduce the time taken nearly by 40% and thereby improve the financial well-being of the weavers. However, teaching this craft is a challenge owing to resistance to adoption of new skill and time and efforts to master the new technique. Overcoming these obstacles could open up new opportunities for the weavers, leading to higher profits and lower production costs.
