Design and Development of Interactive Embellishments for Children’s Clothing with Educational Benefits
摘要
The project presents the design and development of interactive embellishments on shirts for children between four and five years of age. The aim was to identify and present the potential of introducing interactive embellishments and accessories in garments, that can contribute in the development of a child’s motor skills. This conceivably will lead to an improvement in their cognitive development. The key factor was to craft designs that play on the mind of children and increase their curiosity. Each design was worked on paper and then on a digital format using Adobe Illustrator. Raw materials and resources were sourced considering the design, colours, fabrics that would be used to develop the interactive embellishments. Various sewing techniques were used. The range of samples were sewn as per the design introducing the activities that would involve the child. The embellishments were such that would engage the children to improve motor skills and critical thinking. The samples were tested to analyse the difficulty level for each type of activity. The stability of the embellishments was evaluated by testing for rubbing fastness and laundering. The final designs of the interactive embellishments were executed on ten shirts. These wearable interactive shirts were presented to children for taking part in the activity. Their interactions were observed. Both parents and children were involved in the assessment and evaluation of the concept. The parents were asked to rate the designs and their willingness to purchase such garments. Children could perform most activities created on the garments and were thoroughly involved in them. They were engaged in completing each activity and repeated it a number of times to their satisfaction. Children were attracted to the motifs and colours on the embellishments that they could identify. Parents considered both appearance and educational features. The approach showcases how a garment can have a beneficial trait in the development of children. The project open venues for development of such educational interactive garments in the world of fashion and design. It also paves a way for an entrepreneurial venture.
