Measuring the Electromagnetic Shielding Efficiency (EMSE) by placing Two Identical Knitted Fabrics Together using Fair Isle Knitting Techniques

摘要

The fastest man-made technology phenomenon ever to exist is the mobile phones and the main problem is that they use electromagnetic (EM) radiation and long-term exposure can affect our health. In this research, Fair- Isle knitting technique was used to produce diamond patterns on the knitting samples using a combination of 100% Cotton Yarns and Electrically Conductive yarn. The diamond shapes were knitted with the conductive yarns and were expected to act like chicken wires to block EM waves and therefore act as an EM Shield. The main aim of this research was to investigate whether, by placing two identical layers of knitted fabrics together, knitted with a specific Fair- Isle pattern would shield EM waves. The samples were placed in between the emitting and receiving antennas. Both sides of the knitted samples were used as EM shields. Moreover, all samples were rotated at 90° clockwise and EM measurements were taken. The results showed that using two layers of the knitted samples together do provide better EM Shielding with both polarizations. Good EM Shielding Efficiency (EMSE) results were obtained at frequencies of 500, 600, 800 and 900 MHz (EMSE above 92%). Double layers can therefore be considered as EM shielding materials bearing in mind that double layers will make garments bulkier and warmer but comfortable with soft hand.
