Concerning East Asian international relations in the pre-modern era, the order of tianxia, centered around Chinese civilization, held great importance. The Chinese civilization born along the central area of the Huang He (Yellow River) over three thousand years ago spread via Chinese who claimed superiority over the surrounding yi peoples (barbarians) and even felt it was desirable to eventually assimilate them into Chinese civilization.
