FOAN: Design-Deployment and Maintenance Cost Analysis

FOAN'sFuture Optical Access Network (FOAN) commitment to ensuring QoSQuality-of-Services (QoS) parameters such as reliability, 24 × 7 availability, security, scalability, and the ability to add new services comes at a cost to service providers and network operators. Simultaneously, subscriber service packages should be kept at an optimal level to retain subscribers with operators. With rising labor and infrastructure costs, including those associated with civil works, and the incorporation of cutting-edge technology to ensure network availability and security, it is a difficult task for service providers and network operators to maintain their customers’ cost of service. PONPassive Optical Network (PON), WDMWavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)-PONPassive Optical Network (PON), hybrid WDMWavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)-PONPassive Optical Network (PON), and LR-WDMWavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)-PONPassive Optical Network (PON) architectures with OWOptical Wireless (OW) FSOFree Space Optics (FSO) connectivity are considered to be cost-effective next-generation optical network architectures. Additionally, this chapter will describe the convergence network architecture, which is the most cost-effective solution for FOANFuture Optical Access Network (FOAN). Capital expenditure (CapExCapital Expenses (CapEx)) and operational expense (OpExOperational Expense (OpEx)) cost analysis, strategies, planning, and coordination among the various departments during the survey, design, development, and deployment stages for the purpose of minimizing civil work and maximizing resource utilization result in cost-effective solutions for FOANFuture Optical Access Network (FOAN). Cost-effective network architectures and topologies can be used to ensure network operators incur minimal costs. While there are no universally accepted guidelines for designing and deploying cost-effective network architectures, a coexistence strategy that accommodates and deploys legacy networks alongside next-generation networks may result in cost-effective network options. Cost estimates for components, test and measurement equipment and instruments, fiber channelsFiber Channel (FC), transceiver pairs, test beds, outside plant green-field and brown-field deployment costs, and maintenance costs, among others, will be presented and discussed in detail.
