Impact of COVID 19 on Water Consumption in GCC Countries: Lessons to be Learned for Future Crises

摘要

The COVID 19 pandemic was an unprecedented global crisis. In their attempt to contain the disease, countries adopted various preventive measures. People were encouraged and educated on the importance of making behavioral changes related to washing hands. Another measure was resorting to lockdowns, closures and suspension of certain activities. All of these measures have had an impact on how and where water was consumed. The most significant increase observed was in water consumption in households in many countries all over the world including the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council. Located in a region characterized by aridity and water scarcity, the increase in water consumption in GCC countries might have serious implications on water resources and water security. This chapter reviews the impact of COVID-19 crisis on water consumption in GCC countries supported by relevant statistics. The chapter also discusses the need for preparedness for any future crises and concludes with recommendations for the management of the current water resources and new policies to be implemented for water disaster management.
