Advancing Forest Insect Pest Management: A Focus on Biotechnological Approaches

Forest insect pests pose significant threats to global forestry, jeopardizing ecosystem health and economic sustainability. Traditional pest management practices, such as chemical insecticides, have demonstrated limitations in terms of efficacy, environmental impact, and long-term sustainability. Consequently, a shift towards biotechnological approaches has emerged as a promising avenue for enhancing forest pest management strategies. This chapter discusses the current state of biotechnological approaches employed in combating forest insect pests. The biotechnological strategies outlined herein encompass a range of innovative tools and techniques, including the application of genetically modified insect resistant trees and targeted RNA interference for pest-specific gene silencing. Furthermore, we delve into the utilization of genetically engineered entomopathogenic microorganisms for biological control purposes, as well as the development of sterile insect techniques (SIT) to combat insect pests. The adoption of biotechnological approaches in forest insect pest management showcases considerable potential to revolutionize the field. This chapter underscores the importance of embracing innovative strategies for sustainable and environment friendly forest pest management, while also highlighting the need for continued research, risk assessment, and collaboration between scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders to ensure the responsible implementation of biotechnological solutions on a global scale.
