Photoperiod and Temperature Sensitivity in Sorghum

摘要

Sorghum, originating from Africa, plays a crucial role in global agriculture by providing essential nutrition for humans and animals. It is also an important plant due to its potential as a biofuel source. With a growing global population and changing climate patterns, innovative agricultural and biotechnological strategies are vital for enhancing sorghum production. The complex interplay among photoperiod sensitivity, temperature responsiveness, and rainfall adaptation in sorghum cultivars from diverse geographic regions has been commonly investigated to improve growing strategies. The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has a rich repository of sorghum genotypes, serving as an international genebank for biotechnological research. In this chapter, growth, adaptation, and stress resistance in sorghum varieties grown under kharif and rabi seasons are discussed by using data retrieved from ICRISAT. Moreover, it is also discussed how to select the best sorghum varieties for studies related to photoperiod and temperature sensitivities.
