The Nordic Royal Families—The Leading-Edge of Modern Monarchy

Although the three Nordic countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway) had mighty absolute monarchies until the early modern era, all of them had changed into constitutional monarchies by the twentieth century. They promoted further democratic reforms by recognizing daughters as successors to the throne, while in Sweden the sovereign renounced his/her prerogative and has been a “symbolic monarch” since the 1970s. They also established absolute primogeniture in succession. These Nordic dynasties can be regarded as the leading-edge of modern monarchy.
