Mechanical and Metallurgical Analysis of Rotary Friction Welded Low Carbon Steel and Stainless Steel

Different materials have different properties. Because of this reason, their fusion welding is a big and a frequently seen challenge. Thus, the introduction of solid-state welding is a solution to this problem as it occurs below melting temperature. Unlike fusion welding, solid-state welding reduces the potential for phase transfer phenomena. In this research, the dissimilar materials used are MS (mild steel) and stainless steel (SS-304) for Rotary Friction Welding (RFW). This research gives an in-depth understanding regarding the tensile strength, micro-structural behaviour and micro-hardness of RFW (rotary friction welded), mild steel (MS) and stainless steel (SS-304) when one of the materials is set as stationary while the other one is moving. The main key points of results observed are tensile strength and hardness, which are traded off with each other for rotary friction welding. The sample of stainless steel (SS304) stationary and mild steel rotating has shown better results with tensile strength and less hardness, while the stainless steel (SS304) rotating and mild steel stationary has high hardness and less tensile strength. The core area of interest in this research is to identify which material should be set as stationary or rotating to get better mechanical properties, so their detailed study has been carried out further.
