The Communal Culture and Communication in Health Care

We discussed the characteristics of collectivist culture or communal culture and the significance of communal culture in health care. We described the community’s influence on individuals, the concept of group loyalty, informal information, and the prominent use of traditional medicine. In a robust communal culture, our patients are deeply rooted in their homes and neighborhoods; therefore, their daily lives will reflect the communal cultural characteristics. We used Alia’s wedding story to illustrate the strong influence of family and community upon individuals, especially in the decision-making process. By understanding the communal culture, health professionals can be more culturally sensitive in responding to the community’s influence on patients’ perceptions and be open to involving family and relatives in patients’ health-related discussions and decisions while respecting patients’ autonomy.
