This chapter discusses the changing city space in Jakarta with regard to socioeconomic policy and its effect on the expansion of the city. It especially addresses the changes in urban space that occurred in Pondok Pinang caused by the construction of the Pondok Indah suburbs in agricultural areas. The chapter will address the role of master planning and its authority, limits, and contestations in the context of contemporary Indonesian urbanism. The observations show that constructing Pondok Indah transformed agricultural land and plantations into elite suburbs that had tremendous social and economic impacts on the surrounding community. The current residential area is expected to expand into a new city embryo in the southern part of Jakarta. This study emphasizes the development up to the development of the region that impacted the socio-economy of local communities.
