The 2017 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election: The Production of Post-Truth and the Islamic, Urban, Middle-Class Identity
摘要
As a previously overlooked source of knowledge, testimony now plays a prominent role in the age of digital information. With the advancement of technology, the internet has become our source of everyday information. It marks the urge to understand how testimony works and affects our social life, including the processes of public opinion formation that becomes accepted as “truth,” which, in turn, may affect the political mobility of voters and power dynamics in urban politics. This phenomenon is illustrated through an analysis of the social media campaign strategy of the election candidates of the DKI Jakarta Governor’s election in 2017. This chapter emphasizes that the reliability of testimony as a source of knowledge is doubtful when truth is not valued by society as a whole. The implication is seen in the public election wherein the winning candidate was chosen due to irrational considerations, including primordial considerations related to religion and race.
