Biomass-Derived Biochar for Environmental Remediation

Biochar, as a valuable resource, has a huge specific surface area, high degradability, catalytic capabilities, and a wide range of environmental applications, including soil remediation, water purification, and mitigating climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In this regard, biochar is employed as a catalyst, adsorbent, and soil conditioner. It is effective in treating a variety of contaminants, such as organic, inorganic, and radioactive wastes. With careful selection of pyrolysis operating parameters, biochar made from switch grass and wood may have a substantial potential for sequestering carbon. Biochar productivity is ultimately determined by the kinds of feedstocks used and the conditioning during synthesis. The main uses of biochar are in pollution remediation, waste management, soil fertility restoration, mitigating the effects of climate change, and soil carbon sequestration. This book chapter attempts to summarize the research on the raw materials used in the development of magnetic biochar, its modification techniques, and its many creative applications as an environmental catalyst and adsorbent, taking into account prior analyses on biochar, specifically magnetic biochar. It also suggests aspects of biochar that ought to be taken into account for practical uses. Finally, suggestions for further research are given in the assessment of the analysis and contrast of earlier biochar investigations.
