The practice of supervising and managing the utilization, creation, and sustainability of biomass—an organic substance originating from plants and animals—is known as biomass management. This management strategy involves a range of activities aimed at optimizing the use of biomass resources while ensuring their sustainable production and reducing harmful environmental effects. Biomass is a sustainable energy source that can affect the environment in both positive and bad ways, depending on how it is produced and used. Biomass management refers to the process of overseeing and controlling the use, production, and sustainability of biomass, which is an organic material derived from plants and animals. A variety of actions are taken as part of this management practise with the goal of maximising the use of biomass resources while guaranteeing their sustainable production and minimising adverse environmental effects. Depending on its production and use, biomass, a sustainable energy source, can have both positive and negative environmental effects. The following are a few ways that biomass affects the environment: Biomass has clear advantages over conventional fossil fuels due to its abundance and renewable nature, which makes it essential for maintaining the security of the global energy supply. However, it's critical to consider the costs to the environment and resources before implementing bioenergy production. Based on published research, the chapter investigates how the development of bioenergy may affect the environment. Despite a growing trend, bioenergy-focused environmental research did not receive the same level of attention as studies on the energy itself. Soil erosion has received the least attention, while water-related problems (i.e., quantity and quality) are the most important ones affecting the production of bioenergy. Nevertheless, there can be negative consequences to the development of bioenergy.
