摘要

The increasing global population coupled with the finite availability of potable water sources has precipitated a pressing issue of water scarcity. Addressing this challenge necessitates the implementation of water treatment methods, specifically targeting the removal of contaminants to meet the quality standards tailored to specific applications. Among the manifold contaminants continually discharged into water bodies, organic pollutants, such as dyes, originating from industrial and daily human activities constitute a significant fraction. Employing adsorbent materials provides a cost-effective and facile approach to remove water contamination. Contemporary research endeavors are increasingly aligned with the theme of sustainability. Biomass-based adsorbents due to their commendable attributes, including environmental friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and favorable surface properties can meet these criteria. In the present chapter, the authors will discuss the need for wastewater treatment, what are the processes that can be used to treat the wastewater, use of biomass-derived materials for dye removal applications, and why biomass-based materials make an excellent adsorbent.
