Beyond the Bark: Endophytic Fungal Diversity in Taxus spp. and Their Crucial Role in Medicinally Relevant Secondary Metabolites

摘要

Taxus spp. are associated with diverse types of endophytic fungi and both of them mutually associated with each other. The symbiotic relationship between fungal endophytes and their host plants arises from the distinctive adaptive capabilities of these endophytes, allowing them to synchronize their growth with that of the host plant. Endophytic fungi associated with Taxus spp. are reported to produce or help in producing medicinally important secondary metabolites. This chapter aims to explore the various genera and species of endophytic fungi found within Taxus populations and their contributions to the synthesis of bioactive compounds, particularly highlighting the well-known anticancer compound Taxol (Paclitaxel) and other secondary metabolites with potential medicinal applications. Possibility of using commercial utilization of fungal endophytes for the production of medicinally important metabolites of Taxus spp., explored by the researchers, is also highlighted.
