The Beneficial Role of Plant and Fruit by-Product Feed Additives as Immunostimulants in Aquaculture: Perspective from Asia

摘要

The utilization of plant and fruit by-products in feed formulations not only contributes to nutrient recycling but also reduces the environmental footprint of aquaculture. These by-products contain polysaccharides, phenolics, and flavonoids, which are known for their immune-boosting properties. Moreover, the antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of these by-products can significantly mitigate oxidative stress and reduce the prevalence of pathogenic bacteria in aquaculture systems. This, in turn, may decrease reliance on antibiotics, promoting a more natural growth environment for aquatic species. Furthermore, the inclusion of these by-products in aquafeeds has shown promising results in growth promotion, digestive enzyme stimulation, and replacement of expensive feed ingredients, thereby enhancing feed efficiency and reducing production costs. The significance of plant and fruit by-products in aquaculture highlights the multifaceted benefits that contribute to the health and sustainability of aquatic animals. By harnessing these by-products, the aquaculture industry can move toward more sustainable and eco-friendly practices, ultimately contributing to global food security.
