Sustainable Aquaculture Feeds: the Potential of Sargassum Brown Seaweeds as Carbohydrate Sources

Brown seaweeds are a good carbohydrate source because of their high nutritional content and abundance. Certain Sargassum species, such as Sargassum natans and Sargassum fluitans, can be used as aquaculture feed because they grow well in tropical and subtropical seas. This chapter examines the diverse forms and worldwide distribution of seaweeds, highlighting their ecological relevance and the effects of overpopulations on the environment. It emphasizes how Sargassum influxes are becoming more frequent in coastal areas, a phenomenon that may be impacted by climate change, and how crucial it is to use them as an alternative supply for aquaculture feed. The chapter also examines strategies for lowering production costs and lessening the impact on the environment by examining the nutritional makeup and viability of adding seaweed to aquafeeds. Additionally, it examines the nutritional makeup of aquafeeds and suggests ways to maximize the use of seaweed while lowering production costs and causing the least amount of environmental damage.
