Effect of Root and Tuber Peels as a Carbohydrate Source in Africa Aquaculture Production

In many African nations, the development of aquaculture is a vital business that provides jobs, revenue, and protein. However, due to the growing demand for fish products and a declining or stagnant supply from natural sources, it is anticipated that aquaculture production will expand. With this, the supply of protein from the aquaculture sector is expected to increase to accommodate the requirement of protein to the populace and ensure industry sustainability in Africa. Fish nutrition is one of the most crucial elements needed to boost aquaculture output and guarantee the industry’s sustainability in Africa. Feed supplies and pricing have been directly impacted by the rise in demand for aquatic products. This has raised interest in the possibilities of inexpensive, readily available, and locally sourced materials as feed ingredients. Several peels from roots/tubers have been studied with significant results obtained in the livestock sector, which could be an alternative for maize inclusion in the diet for fish. However, the utilization of peel meal by fish species could be restricted due to its high fiber content, low nutrient density, and the existence of antinutritional chemicals. The amount of peel meal included in fish diets varies depending on several factors, including fish species age, breed, agronomic practices, peel processing technology, and plant cultivar. Peel meal’s utility in on-farm fish feed may be enhanced by growing interest in low antinutrient crop breeding, processing technology advancements, and the accessibility of various additives, including amino acids, enzyme products, and antinutrient binding agents, in the feed industry. This chapter examines the compositional potential and future developments of specific root and tuber peels as fish feed materials.
