摘要

In the ever-evolving realm of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), the increasing need for fresh undergraduates and graduates to excel in discipline-specific education, as well as in soft skills such as critical thinking, communication, and teamwork, underscores the importance of integrating Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) into STEM higher education. In this chapter, we introduced the need for HSS-Engineering integration, followed by the current state of HSS-Engineering education in India. Traditionally, Indian engineering curricula have emphasized technical and scientific knowledge. While this approach has produced technically proficient engineers, it has often neglected the crucial role of HSS in fostering soft skills. The introduction of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, with its focus on interdisciplinary education, opens avenues for holistic development and unleashing the true potential of engineers through HSS-STEM integration. An analysis of workforce trends and case studies from U.S. educational institutions that have successfully integrated HSS into their engineering programs have revealed five key pillars essential for cultivating a strong foundation for fresh graduates: (1) Ethical Engineering Practices, (2) Societal and Environmental Impact, (3) Human Factors (4) Global and Cultural Competence, and (5) Regulatory and Policy Understanding. These pillars form the foundation of a modern engineering ethos that is technically proficient and socially, ethically, and globally aware. The chapter acknowledges the challenges in implementing this integration in India, such as institutional inertia, the need for faculty training, and resource limitations. It provides practical recommendations and strategies to address these challenges, emphasizing the importance of phased implementation and leveraging technology for resource optimization. It suggests modular courses in HSS, online learning platforms, and faculty development programs to facilitate interdisciplinary teaching. It underscores the long-term benefits of producing a new generation of engineers who are technically proficient, socially conscious, and adaptable to the complex demands of the future. Along with fulfilling the objective of the book, this chapter serves as a comprehensive guide for educators, policymakers, and industry leaders in India, offering insights and practical strategies for enriching engineering education through the integration of HSS, inspired by successful models from the U.S.
