Muslims, Sacred Texts, and Understanding Sharia in Contemporary Contexts

This chapter provides an overview of fundamental Shari’a concepts and Islamic principles, highlighting its decentralized nature and the role of Muslims scholars (ulama) in its development. It explores the broad spectrum of Shari’a governance, including its application in diverse contexts such as marriage, inheritance, and criminal justice. Furthermore, the chapter discusses the complexities of navigating Shari’a governance in contemporary Muslim societies. It discusses how Islamic law has historically accommodated pluralism and diversity in interpretations, reflecting the dynamic nature of Muslim communities. By elucidating the diverse interpretations and applications of Shari’a, the chapter provides insights into the challenges and opportunities inherent in navigating between Islamic principles and modern legal frameworks. It sheds light on the evolving dynamics of Shari’a governance and the complex interplay between tradition and modernity in contemporary Muslim contexts, especially focusing on Fiqh al-Aqalliyyat, an Islamic jurisprudence of (Muslim) minorities.
