Reconstruction of Three-Dimensional Tissues Using a Tissue Engineering Approach Involving an Apatite-Fibre Scaffold and Radial-Flow Bioreactor

Tissue engineering enables the regeneration of desired tissues (e.g., bone, liver) using autologous cells. The three primary components of tissue engineering are cells, growth factors and scaffolds for the cells, with the scaffolds playing a particularly important role in three-dimensional tissue regeneration. Through a medicine-engineering collaboration, we developed an apatite-fibre scaffold that provides an appropriate microenvironment (i.e., pore structure, chemical composition) for cells to actively generate three-dimensional tissues. In this chapter, we describe the “scaffold for tissue regeneration” and summarise our research on bone and liver regeneration using a radial flow bioreactor to facilitate the construction of three-dimensional tissues.
