Biochar for Remediation of Contaminated Soil

From the last few years, the use of biochar in soil remediation has become an attractive area for research. Through sequestering carbon and improving soil quality and crop yields, biochar—a substance produced from pyrolyzing organic waste materials—has the potential to mitigate climate change. The long-term effects of biochar on soil health and the ecosystem are still unclear, and its dual-edged effects as a soil amendment are currently being discussed. By reducing the mobility and fate of the metal ions in the soil, biochar is utilized to remediate heavy metal-contaminated sites. Metals become less bioavailable for plant uptake when their mobility is reduced. Biochar reduces the availability of pollutants to the receptor by immobilizing them and severing the link between the source, route, and receptor. In this chapter, different synthetic route for biochar and its application has been discussed in detail.
