Algae and cyanobacteria have emerged as valuable sources of dietary food supplements due to their rich nutrient composition and potential applications in various fields, including biotechnology. Spirulina is a prominent example, widely recognized and utilized as a “health food,” available in tablet or dried powder form at supermarkets. Notably, cyanobacteria encompass a spectrum of nutrients, including proteins, amino acids, fructose, fatty acids, pigments, minerals, digestive and restricting enzymes, iron, and vitamin B6. Consumption of these microorganisms as food supplements offers a myriad of health benefits, along with medicinal, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, and therapeutic advantages. For instance, Microcystis aeruginosa and Thalassiosira weissflogii, among others, boast significant concentrations of essential amino acids, rendering them particularly valuable in supplement formulations. Moreover, microalgae have attracted increased attention in recent years, primarily due to their pivotal role in dietary supplementation and their potential utility in diverse biotechnological applications. This growing interest underscores the significance of algae and cyanobacteria as vital contributors to human nutrition and health, paving the way for innovative advancements in food science and biomedicine. As research continues to unravel the multifaceted benefits of these microorganisms, their integration into the food and pharmaceutical industries holds promise for enhancing human well-being and fostering sustainable development.
