Radiological Assessment of Foot and Ankle

The foot and ankle are anatomically and functionally complex structures. The pathological processes involving this region are diverse. Knowledge of imaging modalities as well as radiographic projections is essential to obtain optimal diagnostic information in patients undergoing evaluation for foot and ankle disorders. The various diagnostic imaging modalities serve to complement each other in many clinical scenarios. Radiographs continue to be the most commonly used initial imaging modality [1]. Computed tomography (CT) offers additional diagnostic value in anatomically complex areas and traumatic cases. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enables diagnosis of a wide variety of ligamentous, tendinous, cartilaginous, and other soft tissue pathology [2]. Ultrasonography is useful in the evaluation of superficial soft tissue structures, especially tendons and ligaments.
