Biomechanics of the Foot and Ankle

The foot and ankle joints constitute a highly intricate and interconnected system. While they possess a more limited range of motion compared to the upper extremities, the relationship between their movements and various joints involved is remarkably complex. When subjected to the body’s weight, these joints, along with the supporting ligaments and muscles, adopt a flexible, shock-absorbing role. However, during the act of walking, they transition into a rigid state to facilitate the propulsion of the body forward. It is of utmost importance to ensure the proper functioning of these biomechanical structures to maintain the ability to walk and overall stability. Pathologies affecting the lower extremities often have origins or consequences linked to the biomechanics of the foot and ankle. Conducting a thorough biomechanical assessment in a clinical context is crucial for achieving accurate diagnoses and providing optimal treatment.
