A Unique Case Report of Ischial Tuberosity Apophyseal Avulsion with Hamstring Tendinopathy

Sports and physical activity-related injuries to the hamstring muscle are quite common among footballers. However, apophysitis and apophyseal avulsions are rare among these athletes. The avulsion fracture of ischial tuberosity constitutes to 1.4–4% of hamstring related injuries and is usually due to sudden forceful hip flexion in the knee extended with eccentric hamstring loading (Cohen and Bradley J Am Acad Orthop Surg 15:350–355, 2007). Usually, these avulsions are caused by high-energy trauma which can also cause hip dislocations in the younger populations. These avulsions can go unnoticed if the patient does not exhibit any symptoms or pain during the earlier phase of life however pain and discomfort can present in the later phase of life causing discomfort and affecting performance. We present a unique case report of a 30-year-old professional footballer who sustained a hamstring injury with an incidental finding of a malunion avulsion fracture of the ischial tuberosity apophyseal growth plate which had abnormal growth and fused abnormally.
