Machining is often used to make parts for machines in the automotive, aerospace, and marine industries. As the need for machine parts has grown and manufacturing has improved, machining processes have grown a lot. During the cutting process, friction and plastic deformation generate a lot of heat. A good cooling system is needed to get rid of this heat. Excessive heat generation in the cutting region deteriorates the performance of machining by decreasing the tool life as well as the surface integrity and dimensional accuracy of machining parts. Most of the cutting fluids adversely affect the environment, thus acting as a necessary evil in the machining system. Cutting fluids entail substantial disposal costs and pose health hazards due to non-biodegradable ingredients in their formulations. It is crucial to eliminate harmful components from their formulations in order to make metal-cutting processes environmentally friendly. In the current ecologically concerned society, the bio-oil-based cooling system becomes a superior alternative to harmful cutting fluids. Vegetable oils are one of the prospective environmentally friendly metal-cutting fluids which provide a good lubrication and cooling effect. They prevent health hazards causing skin irritations, respiratory problems, etc. Incorporation of nanoparticles into base fluids to create nanocutting fluids, minimizing lubrication, dry machining, cryogenic cooling, and air cooling are some of the techniques for providing a positive impact on the environment. This article provides a brief overview of the most recent research and advancements concerning environmentally friendly cooling solutions for the machining industry. It highlights how the environmentally friendly cooling system in machining contributes to sustainable development goals.
