Abiotic and Biotic Interactions of Mosquitoes

摘要

Mosquitoes, being cold-blooded organisms, lack the ability to generate internal body heat and, as a result, rely on the surrounding temperature. The temporal and spatial distribution of mosquitoes is intricately tied to abiotic factors, such as temperature, humidity, and rainfall. In tropical and subtropical regions, these small creatures play a crucial role in the transmission of pathogens, such as the malaria parasite, dengue, and the chikungunya virus. The dynamic interplay of abiotic and biotic interactions creates a unique ecosystem that fosters the thriving of mosquitoes. The lifespan of mosquitoes spans approximately 2–4 weeks, a duration influenced by temperature and humidity, besides other factors. Progressing through larval and pupal stages, they complete their cycle within a specific number of days, and finally emerge as adults. The overall life characteristics, including longevity, mating, and survival, are significantly contingent on both abiotic and biotic factors. As global temperatures rise, there is a pressing need for thorough investigations into the effects of these changes on the diversity of mosquitoes, as it has far-reaching implications for public health and disease transmission dynamics.
